make money car wrap advertising

Did you know that you can get paid to drive your car around?  No, this post is not about driving for Uber, Lyft, or even food delivery services.

You get paid to drive your car around like you normally do.  How?   Just turn your car into a moving billboard by signing up for car wrap advertising.

You might be thinking that it’s tacky to have ads wrapped around your car.

Well, when you think about it, the money you earn through car wrap advertising is 100% passive income.  You’re not trading your time for money.  And there is also an option for you to do a partial wrap where you place the sticker on your rearview window instead of the whole car.

Use this extra money to pay for your gas, bills, or even save for that dream vacation!

When the contract is over, you can have your car back to its previous condition.  So even if you want to give this a try, you could earn an extra $5,000 a year in passive income.

What Is Car Wrap Advertising?

Car wrap advertising is another interesting way to make extra money. You earn money by driving your car like you normally do.  Companies are paying you to turn your car into a moving billboard.

Moving billboards (car wrap advertising) is 95% more effective than static billboards.  You only get a few seconds to glance at the static billboard, but with a moving car, you can see it for a much longer time.

If you’re a fan of Sex and the City, you might remember seeing Carrie Bradshaw’s sexy ad on the side of the bus.  You can call this “bus wrap advertising”.

How Does Car Wrapping Work?

Companies go through car wrapping companies to find willing drivers.  Think of car wrapping companies like recruiting agencies where companies go to find the best candidates for the job.

The car wrapping companies serve as the middle man to make sure you’re the right candidate by pre-screening and to make sure you’re qualified.

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 18 years old.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Must have car insurance.
  • Must meet the minimum required mileage per month.
  • You must have a GPS installed in your car (GPS is either provided by you or advertiser).

On top of the minimum requirements, these companies also look favor people that live in busy cities.  It makes sense when you think about it, they want their advertisements to be seen by as many people as possible.

Once you are accepted, you will be entered into their database.  You will be contacted when there is an ad that matches your profile.  Although you might not get to choose the ad, you can always opt-out if you find the ad inappropriate.

After Qualifying for Car Wrapping

Once you’ve been screened, qualified, and accepted the campaign, the company will schedule a time/place for a specialist to place the ad on your car.  The material is usually vinyl decal and will not damage or scratch your paint.

A campaign can run anywhere from one month to a year, and sometimes even longer.  After a campaign is complete, you just make another appointment for the specialist to remove the decal.

How Much Money Can You Make?

How much you make with car wrap advertising depends on a few things:

  • The kind of car you’re driving and its condition
  • Your daily route / how often you drive
  • The length of the contract
  • The company you’re working with
  • The type/size of the ad

You can make as little as $50 and as much as $1,000 per month, but the average is around $400 per month.

This is the ultimate passive income where you get paid monthly just driving like you normally would.

What If I Don’t Have A Car?

While it is not common, there are companies that will give you an already wrapped car to drive around. This is also known as “free car” promotion.  However, this type of arrangement comes with certain conditions such as drive X number of hours per day.

While you might still be able to find “free car” promotion, it is becoming obsolete.  Companies have realized that it makes economical sense to have people drive their own cars.  Think of Taxi and Uber.

Car Wrapping Scams

Like most industries, car wrapping is also full of scammers.

Not all car wrapping companies are created equal.  Before you sign up to work with any company, make sure you do a search on the company history, reputation, payments, and who will be responsible for removing the wraps at the end of the contract.

A common scam that is happening to almost every industry is the Western Union Check scam.  The “company” will tell you to pay upfront for the ad installation cost and they will send you a reimbursement check.

They will then send you a fake check where the value is a lot more than the cost of the installation.  Let’s say the cost to install the ad is $300, the check they send you is $1000.

They will tell you that their team made a mistake, but you should go ahead and deposit the check anyway.  For your trouble, you can keep a portion of the check and just wire them back $500.

A few days later, their check bounces.  You will have lost $500 if you wired the money from your account, the cost of the ad installation, and possibly bank fee for the bounced check.

Some general rules of thumb:

  • If they’re asking for a monthly fee to match you with advertisements, it’s a scam.
  • If they’re asking for wrapping cost, it’s a scam.
  • They don’t have a customer service line, most likely a scam.

If you’re ever feeling unsure, just search the for reviews of the company and look it up on the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Bottom line:  Never pay upfront.  Never wire money.  If it feels like a scam, it most likely is a scam.

There are plenty of legitimate companies that pay to have logos on your car.  You must do your due diligence if you come across a company that is not on this list.

1. Wrapify

Wrapify operates nationwide and is one of the few companies that have the age requirement of 21 instead of 18.  Their FAQ section is fairly thorough and should answer any questions you might have.

Requirements:

  • Be 21 years or older
  • Pass a background check
  • Use a 2010 vehicle or newer
  • 50 plus miles per day.

Earning Potential:  $196 – $280 per month for a partial wrap and up to $452 a month for a full wrap.

Locations:  Nationwide

2. CarVertise

Founded in 2012, CarVertise is another well-known car wrapping company that partners with national brands.

Requirements:

  • 30 plus miles per day.
  • Have a clean driving record
  • Use a 2008 vehicle or newer
  • Factory finish paint job

Earning Potential:  $300 – $1200 per campaign and a typical campaign lasts between 2 to 6 months.  You can expect to get paid between $100-$200 per month.

Locations:  New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Boston, and Wilmington, Delaware.

3. Nickelytics

In order to qualify for Nickelytics, you must be a ride-share driver who clocks in at least 30 miles a day.  The company offers three different wrap options: Back windshield, light wrap, and full wrap and you can earn up to $500 per month.

Requirements:

  • Drive 30 miles per day or 150 miles per week
  • Use a 2010 vehicle or newer
  • Ride-share driver (must also work for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or Postmates, etc)

Earning Potential:  Up to $500 per month (full wrap)

Locations:  Florida (Tampa, St. Petersburg, Fort Myers Cape Coral Naples), Denver (Colorado), Louisiana (New Orleans), and Maine (Portland) and more to come in 2020.

4. FreeCarMedia

FreeCarMedia is another great company that pays you to wrap your car and drive.  A campaign can last from a few months to 2 years.

Requirements: While they don’t list any specific requirements on their websites, they do ask about the year/make/model of the car, how many miles you drive per day, as well as your driving record.

Earning Potential:  $50+ per month for partial wrap and up to $400 per month for a full wrap.

Locations:  Nationwide

5. Car Bucks

Car Bucks is a car wrapping and advertising network company that matches commuters willing to display ads on their rear window, rather than the full wrap.  The company offers 3, 6, and 12-month advertising plans.

The standard ad banner is 6″ x 30″ and you can display as many as three ad banners.

Requirements: No specific requirements on their website, but they want to know about the commuting route and frequency, daily commuting times, and year/make/model of the car.

Earning Potential: $1 per commuting hour per banner.  For a half-hour commute with a singer banner, you can earn $20/month for a 3-month contract, or $25/month if you sign up for a year contract. You don’t make as much money, but the banners are also smaller and won’t block your rear view from inside.

Locations:  Nationwide

6. Referral Cars

Referral Cars differentiate themselves from other car wrapping companies by offering both commission-based and non-commission-based campaigns.  Most other companies offer non-commission based campaigns, meaning you get paid a set amount each month.

The majority of their ads are small and placed on the rear window so you never have to worry about paint damages or your view being blocked.

Earning Potential:  I wasn’t able to find this information, but they did mention that you will make money within 90 days of accepting one of their campaigns or claim a $100 gift card.

Locations:  Nationwide

7. StickerRide

To get started with StickerRide, you need to download the StickerRide app, register your car, choose a campaign, submit the application and wait for the results.  The nice thing about StickerRide is that they allow you to choose the advertisement.

Requirements: Must download the StickerRide app as they use your phone’s GPS system to track your miles.

Earning Potential:  This one is a bit different where you earn points and then convert points for money.  One mile = one point, and then use that to multiply by your tariff.  The tariff depends on 4 parameters (location, time, car class, and the chosen type of stickers).  The cost per point starts at $0.1 for the US and £0.1 for the UK.

Locations: Nationwide
