What Is A Voice Over Artist?
A voice over artist or actor is someone who uses their voice to narrate, promote, explain, or tell stories without being physically seen.
There are many different kinds of voice-over jobs and most voice-over actors choose to specialize in one or two areas. Here are some of the areas where you can find voice-over work:
- Radio and TV commercials
- Video Games
- Educational Online Content
- Recorded Telephone Messages
Voice-over work opportunities are everywhere and even if you have no experience, you can still find voice acting jobs for beginners.
How Much Does a Voice Over Artist Make?
According to ZipRecruiter, the national average voice over job salary is over $81,000/year at the time this post is published. That said, what you earn will vary depending on the company you’re working for, the project, your experience, and so on.
It goes without saying that you’d make a lot more money being the voice behind game shows such as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy than selling your services on a freelance website such as Fiverr.
Did you know that Bart Simpson is voiced by a woman and she gets paid $300,000 for every episode of The Simpsons? Crazy right?
How To Become a Voice Over Actor?
1. Free Resources
If you’re anything like me, then you probably don’t want to pay for anything before doing your own extensive research.
And I am all for free courses.
Julie over at Work From Home VoiceOvers has a FREE mini-course that covers what skills you need to be successful and how to successfully book gigs as a voiceover actor.
Julie has been working from home doing voice overs since 2011 and has narrated and produced over 100 audiobooks. Additionally, she had worked on radio ads, television ads, corporate videos, and some other projects.
2. A Quiet Room
You don’t need a studio, but a quiet room is a must. Most of us don’t have the luxury of having an extra, quiet room, but you can make it work by being creative.
I recorded some videos in my walk-in closet and didn’t run into any issues. The clothes in the closet and the carpet will help dampen the sound. You can also put a small blanket on the floor to block out the sound.
At the bare minimum, you should have a decent microphone, a mic stand (if your microphone doesn’t come with it), and headphones. You might be able to find these items around the house or you can get them all on Amazon for less than $100.
- Microphone – my first microphone was a Blue Snowball for less than $50 on Amazon. I recently just purchased a Blue Yeti for a little over $100 and I highly recommend it.
- Mic stand – to hold the microphone if it doesn’t come with it.
- Headphones – you can get one for around $30 on Amazon or use one that comes with your phone.
4. Build Your Portfolio
This is tricky starting out since nobody wants to hire someone with no prior work experience and where can you get experience if you can never get any work? Chicken or egg kind of situation.
While not ideal, you can gain experience by doing some free voice-over work and if they like you, they might even hire you in the future. Another way to start is by using the Fiverr platform – post some of your sample work or services and wait for people to hire you.
