What Is A Voice-Over Artist?

A voice-over artist or actor is someone who uses their voice to narrate, promote, explain, or tell stories without being physically seen.

There are many different kinds of voice over jobs and most voice-over actors choose to specialize in one or two areas.  Here are some of the areas where you can find voice-over work:

  • Radio and TV commercials
  • Audiobooks
  • Podcasts
  • Video Games
  • Educational Online Content
  • Recorded Telephone Messages
  • Animations

Voice-over work opportunities are everywhere and you can easily find voice-over work at home opportunities.

How To Become an Online Voice-Over Actor

1. A Quiet Room

You don’t need a studio, but a quiet room is a must.  Most of us don’t have the luxury of having an extra, quiet room, but you can make it work by being creative.  I record my YouTube videos in my walk-in closet and it has been working really well for me.  The clothes in the closet and the carpet will help dampen the sound.  You can also put a small blanket on the floor to block out the sound.

2. Equipment

At the bare minimum, you should have a decent microphone, a mic stand (if your microphone doesn’t come with it) and headphones.  You might be able to find these items around the house or you can get them all on Amazon for less than $100.

  • Microphone – my first microphone was a Blue Snowball for less than $50 on Amazon.  I recently just purchased a Blue Yeti for a little over $100 and I can’t recommend it enough.
  • Mic stand – to hold the microphone if it doesn’t come with it.
  • Headphones – you can get one for around $30 on Amazon or the use one that comes with your phone.

3. Build Your Portfolio

This is tricky starting out since nobody wants to hire someone with no prior work experience and where can you get experience if you can never get any work?  Chicken or egg kind of situation.

While not ideal, you can gain experience by doing some free voice-over work and if they like you, they might even hire you in the future.  Another way to start is by using the Fiverr platform – post some of your sample work or services and wait for people to hire you.

What Do Voice-Over Jobs Pay?

According to ZipRecruiter, the national average voice actor salary is over $90,000/year at the time this post is published.  That said, what you earn will vary depending on the company you’re working for, the project, your experience, and so on.

It goes without saying that you’d make a lot more money being the voice behind game shows such as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy than selling your services on a freelance website such as Fiverr.

Did you know that Bart Simpson is voiced by a woman and she gets paid $300,000 for every episode of The Simpsons?  Crazy right?

  • Building a good portfolio is really important to grab new assignments for any kind of work may it be a voice-over artist. But, how to establish a good portfolio is a big question? It isn’t easy to grab new projects being a newbie. Do you agree?

    • Absolutely! That’s exactly what I said when I first applied for jobs after graduating from college. They all wanted experience, but where can I get experience if they don’t give me a chance? It’s a game of chicken and egg lol. It’s hard starting out in any field and not just voice-over. Just gotta accept some low-paying jobs or even offer free services. I know FIVERR is a great place to start for freelancers. Begin offer your services there and build your portfolio.
