What Is Bookkeeping?

Bookkeeping simply means keeping financial records for a business or an individual.

Your job as a bookkeeper is to keep a good record of daily financial transactions (money going in and money going out), and then prepare monthly or quarterly financial reports.

You don’t need an accounting degree or have a CPA to be a successful bookkeeper.  In fact, you just need to be organized, pay attention to details, and decent computer skills.

You might already some skills to be a bookkeeper without realizing it.  I might stretch it and call myself a “bookkeeper” since I keep a record of money going in and out for my blog.

While large companies employ bookkeepers full-time, smaller companies often hire freelance bookkeeper (that’s where you come in) to help them stay on top of their finances.  That’s not to say that you can’t work for large companies.

How Much Does A Bookkeeper Make?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, a bookkeeper’s average annual salary is $40,000 per year.

However, Ben Robinson over at Bookkeeper Business Launch pointed out that as a freelancer or contractor, you can actually earn a higher hourly rate while working fewer hours.

Ben has trained over 4,000 students and some of them earn up to $125/hour!  But on average, they earn $60 – $80 an hour.

How To Become A Virtual Bookkeeper?

The good news is that you don’t need a college degree in accounting to be a bookkeeper.  But you do need to know how to use the spreadsheets, Quickbooks or other popular bookkeeping software, and some basic accounting.

Believe it or not, these skills are not hard to learn.  The most important thing you need is a keen eye for details.

The bookkeeping/accounting software will do all the basic math for you, but it won’t be able to spot when something isn’t right.  Sure, the software can do “1 + 1 = 2”, but should 1 + 1 even be there in the first place.

So where to begin?

Ben over at Bookkeeper Launch has created a FREE course to give you an inside look at what virtual bookkeeping is all about.

Ben has been a CPA since 1999 and even owned his own accounting firms.  He sold his practice in 2015 and has trained over 4,000 bookkeepers.

Ben doesn’t just teach you how to be a bookkeeper, but he also teaches you how to run your own online bookkeeping business.  Work anywhere and anytime you want.

The free course has 3 classes and covers the following:

  1. Class 1 – Why Bookkeeping Rocks
  2. Class 2 – Your Recipe For Success
  3. Class 3 – Start Your Biz + Get Your First Client

How Do I Know If This Is Even For Me?

I get it.  I get skeptical too when something sounds too good to be true.  That’s why in the first class of the free course, you will learn if bookkeeping is even right for you.

The course is split about 50/50 between learning bookkeeping skills and business/marketing skills.

Ben wants you to learn the business aspect of it while learning bookkeeping skills.  You want to be ready for your first client when you are done with the course.

When I first learned that you can make money blogging, I dived right in with both feet not knowing a darn thing about blogging.

Why?

Well…why not?  You miss a 100% chance of the shot you don’t take right?

Why Even Start a Virtual Bookkeeping Business?

One word:  Freedom.

Can you imagine working anywhere and anytime you want?  You never have to compromise family time or rush sitting in traffic just to go to work.

The internet is your friend.

Nobody will invest in you, except you!
